About the trail
From Kandy to Nuwara Eliya
through the heart of tea country
Beginning in Kandy, Sri Lanka’s cultural capital, the Pekoe Trail winds its way through the central highlands to Nuwara Eliya — the cool, colonial hill station the British once called “Little England.” Along the way it passes through Hatton, Haputale, and Ella, three of the most beloved highland towns on the island, each offering their own character, scenery, and stories.
The name says it all. “Pekoe” is a grade of Ceylon black tea — and for most of the route, you are walking through it. The trail follows old estate paths, ridge lines, and forest tracks surrounded by the very tea bushes whose leaves fill cups around the world. The climb is gradual and manageable, making it accessible to walkers of all abilities, not just seasoned trekkers.
