Into the Cultural Triangle

A morning climb at Mihintale, the hill where Buddhism is said to have first been introduced to Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BC, followed by a visit to Polonnaruwa, the island's well-preserved medieval capital, before continuing to Sigiriya for the evening.

A full day dedicated to Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the 5th-century royal citadel and UNESCO World Heritage Site rising from the plains below. Climb at a comfortable pace, with time to take in the frescoes, mirror wall, and the views from the summit, plus a village tour in the surrounding countryside.

Cave Temples on the Road to the Hill Capital
The route south takes in three distinct sacred sites — the painted cave temples of Dambulla, the unusual Hindu-Buddhist fusion architecture of Nalanda Gedige, and the historic Aluvihara Rock Temple, where the Buddhist scriptures were first committed to writing — before arriving in Kandy for the evening.

A morning at Kandy's Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, one of Buddhism's most venerated sites, housing a relic of the Buddha's tooth. The drive back to Colombo includes a stop at Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya, a temple linked to a legendary visit by the Buddha himself.
