From December to March, Mannar and the northern wetlands host tens of thousands of migratory species including Greater Flamingos, making it the finest window for birding in Sri Lanka’s dry zone. The southern wet zone — Kitulgala, Sinharaja, and the highlands — offers excellent endemic birdwatching year-round.

Day 01 : Arrival → Negombo (Bandaranaike International Airport)
Arrive at the airport and transfer to Negombo — a short drive that gets you settled and rested ahead of nine full days of birding. Negombo’s coastal lagoons already offer early opportunities for shorebirds and waterbirds if you arrive with time to spare.

Day 02 : Negombo → Wilpattu (Via Negombo Lagoon & Anawilundawa)
An action-packed morning on the water before heading north through one of Sri Lanka’s most important Ramsar wetlands. The day offers a striking contrast between coastal lagoon birds and the forest and scrub species of Wilpattu country.

Day 03 : Wilpattu — Full Day Safari (Wilpattu National Park)
A full day inside Wilpattu — Sri Lanka’s largest national park and one of its most rewarding for birding. The park’s unique “villus” (natural lakes) attract extraordinary concentrations of waterbirds alongside forest species, raptors, and the chance of leopard and sloth bear sightings.

Day 04 : Wilpattu → Mannar (Peak Migratory Bird Season)
Mannar is Sri Lanka’s most exciting winter birding destination — a remote peninsula sitting on the Central Asian flyway, where migratory species arrive in their thousands between December and March. The Vankalai Sanctuary in particular is world-renowned for its flamingo flocks and shorebird diversity.

A final morning of birding around Mannar’s lagoons before driving south to Anuradhapura. The ancient city’s vast reservoirs are outstanding birding sites in their own right — herons, storks, and raptors gather in numbers around the tank margins at dusk.

Day 06 : Anuradhapura → Sigiriya (Via Ritigala Forest Reserve)
A morning in Sri Lanka’s first ancient capital — a UNESCO World Heritage Site with sacred sites dating back to the 3rd century BC — before moving on to the forest trails of Ritigala, a little-visited highland forest with excellent endemic birdwatching potential.
